Zoom Lecture – COVID-19 Skin Manifestations (June 2021)

Coronavirus is a version of common viruses that causes infections in the nose, sinuses, and upper throat. There’s a term you may hear associated with COVID-19 called the Cytokine storm. Cytokines are part of our immune system and affect other cells. In wound healing, cytokines are a normal component of the inflammatory response to skin and tissue damage and necessary to facilitate wound closure. However, with COVID-19, the immune activity becomes overactive, creating a situation where the immune cells cannot stop themselves. This cytokine overreaction creates coagulopathy issues that may damage multiple organs, including the skin.  This presentation examines skin and mucous membrane manifestations that may be related to COVID-19, review ICD-10 codes available for reporting COVID skin manifestations, and discuss differentiating COVID-19 skin manifestations from other tissue damage that look similar to other wound etiologies such as deep tissue pressure injury and Kennedy Terminal Ulcers/skin failure.
